The Fourth Courtyard

This castle courtyard was created during the first Piccolomini renovations in the mid-17th century. However, farm buildings, administrative buildings, and armoury had previously stood on this site. The most architecturally interesting feature here is the portal above the passageway to another part of the complex. The portal features the Piccolomini coat of arms and the Order of the Golden Fleece. The text provides information about Ottavio I Piccolomini. However, there are other places here that are also worth mentioning.

The Forestry Administration Building

Originally an old smithy, whose history dates back to the early history of the castle. It is likely that it was already here during the Smiřický era. During the Piccolomini period, it was raised by one floor. Later, the building was to be used as a rectory, and in recent times it housed the administration of the Náchod estate forests. That is why it is still referred to as the Forest Building.

The Regional Government Building, Known as Kostka

Originally referred to as the old office. This is the county office building with a hall on the ground floor featuring a magnificent stucco ceiling. This building was also raised by one floor during the Piccolomini period. Due to its almost cubic shape, it is now referred to as the Cube.

The Turion

One of the most important buildings in the complex. Artillery bastion – turion. Buildings of this type are very rare in Central Europe. It is a security feature from the Piccolomini period, but it probably never served its purpose. The ground floor of the building housed stables. Later, the purpose of the building changed, and in the 19th century, a castle theater was built on the first floor. Subsequently, it was used as a farm building with stables.

The Piccolomini Garden

The French-style garden first appeared here in the mid-18th century. It was modified several times in the following years. The most significant changes took place in the second half of the 1940s, when a circular fountain was placed in the center and a statue of Diana, goddess of hunting, was placed at the back.
