The Lower Courtyard

The trapezoidal courtyard of the castle, which is now the most important part in terms of visitor traffic. The ticket office and entrance to the building's administration are located here. This courtyard also has several monuments to times past.

The Renaissance Portals

The two Renaissance portals located in this courtyard date back to the Renaissance reconstruction period. Above the entrances, on the left-hand side, we can see the coat of arms of Albrecht Václav Smiřický. The coats of arms on the right-hand side are empty, indicating that the lord of the castle was not married.

Sgraffito

The south wall of the courtyard is decorated with Renaissance sgraffito, again from the Smiřický family of Smiřice. The date is documented by the initials of a member of the Smiřický family above the windows to the ticket office. However, the sgraffito is a copy from the 1970s, when the Náchod Castle complex underwent reconstruction and the original sgraffito was either covered or completely replaced. The original example of sgraffito is located just above the windows to the ticket office.

The Clock Tower

A small clock tower was also built during the Renaissance reconstruction. In later Baroque modifications, it acquired a sheet metal onion-shaped roof with a hexagonal top, a dome, and a weather vane. The tower houses a non-functional Baroque clock mechanism. The current time is struck by two chimes from the early 18th century.
