The Fifth Courtyard
The entrance and youngest courtyard of the complex. It is lined on two sides by an administrative building. The courtyard is dominated by a small Baroque fountain with the Piccolomini coat of arms. On the right-hand side is a building known as the dungeon.
The building surrounding the courtyard is the youngest structure in the entire complex. It was built in the first half of the 18th century during the era of the last Piccolomini family. In the past, the building served as the administrative center of the Náchod estate, housing offices and apartments for officials. In the past, there was a sundial above the passageway from the main gate. During the 1970s and 1980s, reconstruction of the entire building began, but it has not been completed to this day.
Two gates lead into this courtyard. The main gate from the castle avenue is decorated with rich sculptural ornamentation. The dominant features here are the Piccolomini family crest and statues of the gods Ares and Hercules. The second gate from the so-called chrastina is less ornate. Here we find only the Piccolomini and Kolowrat crests and two urns on either side.
